On-snow review
Beautiful skis from Kästle. This special model, called Legend 1956, uses graphics inspired by the famous ski from that year. At 83 mm underfoot, it is relatively wide and distinctly all-mountain in character. Many testers liked it, although some thought it slightly too short. Comments included: “If I had to take one pair on a trip knowing there would be three days of concrete-hard pistes and three days of snowfall, this would be it. Secure on hard snow. Nothing vibrates or chatters at higher speeds. In soft snow they charge through everything. The ideal one-ski quiver – every condition, every kind of snow, carved or skidded.” Another tester wrote: “They track long and medium arcs pleasantly and subtly. They move easily into the next turn, but are reluctant to tighten into short radii. The short rocker absorbs irregularities. I missed a little aggression.” We also heard: “Pleasant and fairly dynamic, carving beautiful arcs on well-groomed pistes. They initiate quickly and surprised me with their agility and light steering. Unfortunately, they do not damp rough snow particularly well and hammer the shins without mercy.” This was followed by: “An interesting versatile ski. Good on piste, and it does not have to be perfectly groomed. A brief excursion off piste is no problem either. Fairly stable and secure, although they require some effort.” There were other voices too: “I looked for support on a frozen piste and did not find it. In keeping with the classic graphics, they ski better on hard snow.” And: “They look beautiful. Fairly lethargic, without much energy. For relaxed skiing in varied conditions. I think the next length up would be more enjoyable.”
“Excellent skis that can genuinely be called versatile and all-day: morning groomers, then the afternoon ‘cauliflowers’ – those lumpy piles of churned-up snow. They are exemplary even after a light overnight snowfall. Suitable for every style of skiing except true off-piste use.”
